Earthquakes can generate three different types of seismic waves: P (primary) waves, S (secondary) waves and surface waves.
- P Waves- They move out from the focus, fastest of all 3 waves, can move though solids and liquids, and go up and down / back and forth.
- S Waves- They move out from the focus, slower than P- Waves, can only move through solid rock, move up and down / back and forth, and they are right angle to P-Waves.
- Surface Waves- They are formed when P and S waves reach the Earths surface, causes the ground to shake, and lastly they move side to side and roll like an ocean wave.
